This year’s conference celebrates 3 decades of the international journal Nursing Ethics and engages with themes discussed in the journal since the first issue in 1994.  

Plenary speakers include Professors Chris Gastmans, Marsha Fowler, Settimio Monteverde, Franco Carnevale, Loredana Sasso, Maria Grazia De Marinis, Riitta Suhonen, Georgina Morley and Ann Gallagher. They will reflect on philosophical, empirical and methodological developments in nursing ethics over the last 30 years and look to the future of the field.

We now invite Abstracts for our special anniversary nursing ethics conference, which will be hosted by the University of Genoa, Italy. The conference will bring together scholarship and research on a wide range of past and present ethical issues and look to the future of nursing ethics.

Themes include – but are not limited to - negotiating ethical aspects of care relationships with care-recipients, families and communities; managing challenges such as scarce resources; ethical aspects of care-giver well-being; nurses engagement with ethical/moral climate of care organisations; regulatory ethics which impact nursing practice; nursing ethics methodologies and innovations in ethics education.

The 2023 conference is organised by the Academy of Nursing, University of Exeter in collaboration with Prof. Annamaria Bagnasco, Department of Health Sciences, University of Genoa, Prof. Ann Gallagher, Editor-in-Chief and the international Editorial Board of the journal Nursing Ethics.

The Human Rights and Nursing Awards will be presented at the conference on 14th July 2023.

Practitioners, researchers, educators, managers and students in the field of health and social care from around the world are invited to attend and participate in this important conference to engage in discussion regarding responses to ethical challenges locally and globally.  

Abstracts are invited for oral presentations, posters and symposia to address the conference theme and other ethical issues in care by 17th March 2023

Guidelines for Submission of Abstracts

• All abstracts must be submitted by email to Helen Smith – h.smith5@exeter.ac.uk
• All abstract submissions and presentations must be written in English.
• The abstracts should be no longer than 250 words and reflect the content of the presentation. Do not include pictures or diagrams.
• The deadline for abstract submission is 17th March 2023
• Scientific committee members will review and select submitted abstracts. Selection will be based on originality, relevance to conference theme and evidence of scholarly practice.
• The main author (must also be the contact author) will receive an email by 20th April 2023 confirming the acceptance of non-acceptance of the abstract.
• All accepted abstracts will be published in the conference materials.
• In order for an abstract to be presented, the presenting author must register and pay the registration fee by 15th May, 2023

Every day, all over the world, nurses make a positive difference to the lives of
individuals, families and communities. The care delivered by nurses is directed to
everyone, especially to some of the most vulnerable people in our global community.
The exceptional work of some nurses in promoting and enacting respect for human
rights for everyone represent a source of inspiration for other nurses. We believe that
these nurses deserve to be acknowledged and celebrated.
The Nursing Ethics journal presents the Human Rights and Nursing Awards yearly to
two nurses in recognition of their outstanding commitment to human rights. These
awards exemplify the essence of nursing’s philosophy of care.
The Awards were first given in 2001 and have since gained in momentum. They have
been given to nurses working in different settings, from the Gaza Strip to Australia,
from the Republic of Ireland to Cambodia, Brazil and India on projects involving the
poorest people, as well as pioneering innovative care, active social advocating and
teaching health care personnel in all types of settings. The aim of the Awards is to give
nurses visibility and to celebrate those whose work fosters international respect for
human rights and dignity of people everywhere.
The Awards are presented each year during an official ceremony that takes place
during the Nursing Ethics and International Ethics in Care Conference.

Criteria for the Human Rights and Nursing Awards

A selection panel, composed of members of the Nursing Ethics Editorial Board,
service users, students and lecturers from the Academy of Nusing at the University of
Exeter, reviews all nominations for the Human Rights and Nursing Awards annually.
 

1. The contributions of the nominee have influenced health care and/or nursing
   practice
2. The contributions and accomplishments of the nominee should be worthy of
   international recognition in the field of human rights

Nominations can be submitted throughout the year. Possible candidates need to be nominated and sponsored by others. The Award includes a significant financial reward, which is to be used for the furtherance of the award recipient’s work.
